Fishing and yachting in Todos Santos

Humpback Whales

Humpback Whales

Todos Santos is a picturesque coastal town of Baja California Sur located at the foothill of the stunning Sierra de la Leona Mountains and about a one-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. The area offers some of the most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes of Baja, including 8 miles of pristine beaches bathed by the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. This strategic location, together with its year-round comfortable mild weather makes fishing and yachting in Todos Santos the two most popular activities.

There are numerous tours that invite visitors to spend a whole day in open waters fishing and enjoying the breathtaking sightseeing. Options are varied: you can rent a “panga” or a luxurious yacht; you can take a public tour or ask for a private one. No matter your selection, you’ll always be accompanied by a professional bilingual crew that will teach you the basics (in case you are a beginner) and will help you catch the best samples!

Sport fishing is a favorite in Todos Santos because the Pacific waters off its coasts are greatly prolific and the weather is relatively good all year round. Those who practice bottom fishing will find plenty of snapper, dog snapper, grouper, and cabrilla. The ones who prefer deep sea fishing can catch bue, black and stripped marlin; Dorado; sailfish; wahoo; roosterfish; yellow tail and yellow-fin tuna among many other species. There are also excellent spots to practice surf fishing along the whole Pacific coast in this region. Pargo, snapper, cabrilla, sierra, and sometimes even rooster fish can be caught from the shores. The fishing seasons are important to consider, too. Marlin is abundant all year round, but some other species are to be found only at certain times in the area.

Not everything is about fishing in Todos Santos. You can enjoy a marvelous day in the open sea, admiring the area’s natural beauty. Some yachting tours include other water activities like kayaking, snorkeling or diving in impressive spots and some offer great watching experiences. During the months of November through April, it’s high season to enjoy great whale watching tours. At this time of year the huge Gray and Humpback whales visit the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to give birth and nurse their calves before returning to the waters of Alaska and Siberia. The view of these giants sprawling truly close to your boat is incredibly beautiful. During your voyage, you may also spot some friendly bottlenose dolphins playing around, some sea turtles, sharks and huge manta rays.

Those interested in fishing should keep in mind that Mexican Laws require that every person aboard a fishing vessel must carry a valid fishing license; so you should remember to ask your travel agent for it, or print it yourself online. It is not required, though, for snorkeling or whale watching tours.

For those who love the ocean and visit Baja, taking a trip to Todos Santos is definitely a not-to-miss. A tip? Once you’ve got your fish, ask your captain to have it cooked onboard. There’s nothing more pleasurable than dining your own catch in open waters. Enjoy it!

Looking for the Surf Paradise? So Visit Los Cabos

surf - Julio FonyatAlmost everyone knows that Los Cabos is one of the most popular destinations for family vacations for its wide variety of tours. Any activity you choose, you will be able to get in touch with nature wherever you go. However, the most popular activity in the area of Los Cabos is surfing. This region boasts the best beaches and surfing spots in the Latin America and North America as well. Are you looking for the surf paradise? So, visit Los Cabos.

One of the popular places to go surfing is Cabo San Lucas. Cabo San Lucas offers diversity, different levels of difficulty depending if you are an expert or a beginner, a beautiful coastal scenery and, of course, great waves. The most well-known place for surfers is Monuments. This surf spot is a very rocky left break that goes around a rocky point into a small cove. Many years ago, people thought it was just a stretch of water with a concrete block that marked a turnoff toward the reef. Monuments was named that way because of the view given by the large rocks that stick out from the ocean. Despite being a very famous site for surfers, it must be said that only experienced surfers can deal with its challenging breaks. The large number of rocks in the take-off area and throughout the cove can cause severe injuries in inexperienced surfers. And in case you are wondering, the best time of the year to visit it is during the Summer and Spring.

Another great place for surf lovers in Los Cabos is San Jose del Cabo. First of all, San Jose del Cabo is located in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur at the south end of the Baja California peninsula. This city is considered the “quiet sister” of the “wild” Cabo San Lucas. 32.8 km (20.38 miles) separate these two famous destinations which are joined by the well known Los Cabos Tourist Corridor. On the Tourist Corridor, near San Jose del Cabo, you will find many renowned beaches among surfers. For example, one of them is called Zippers located just west of the town. This beach is worldly famous provides lots of fun, fast right breaks and many surf tournaments. Unfortunately, since it is a popular place, it can get a little crowded. However, there is another beach where you can enjoy in a relaxed way because only a few people go there. This beach is called Shipwrecks and it has one the most amazing coastal landscape in Los Cabos.

And finally, last but not least, a further great place for surfers is located in Todos Santos, on the side of the Pacific Ocean. Todos Santos is located 64 kilometers (40 miles) north of Cabo San Lucas and it is a much quieter destination than other cities of the state of Baja California Sur. Todos Santos has been given the “Pueblo Mágico” (Magical Village) award in 2006, not only because of its natural beauty or cultural importance but also because many tourists keep coming back it. This coastal peaceful town is a well known place for surfers. There are even surf schools for families. The most famous beach in Todos Santos is Cerritos Beach. Luckily, this spot is great for both beginners and experts. The breaks at Cerritos are continuous; because of this, there are many waves on the shallow water inside the breaks. This is way, it is perfect for novice surfers.

As you see, Los Cabos offers a lot of exceptional places for all those who love practising this water sport. However (and fortunately), surf is not the only water activity available. You can also try some snorkeling, stand up paddle surfing, wakeboarding, kayaking and many others.
